Bachelor of Engineering Technology: Become an engineer in New Zealand

The Bachelor of Engineering Technology programme consists of three main strands, students can choose between the following fields:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology(Civil): Students develop the skills and knowledge for a career in civil engineering. Graduates of this course will be able to apply their analytical mind to a broad range of civil engineering problems. They will receive skills in mathematics, natural science and engineering fundamentals which will enable them to design and oversee execution of solutions for infrastructure development and management.Civil engineers are necessary for the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, harbours, water and waste water facilities.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology(Mechanical): Students learn about machine design, machine repair and tools. Mechanical engineers are required in any industry that utilizes machines, this gives them a wide variety of job opportunities ranging from working at production lines in factories to printing presses. As a mechanical engineer you would spend your working hours determining the requirements of the production manager, carrying out feasibility studies, researching the use of energy sources, maintaining machinery, researching material efficiencies and using software to prepare blueprints of machines or machine parts.
  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology(Electrical): Students develop core skills in mechatronics (merges the two disciplines of mechanical engineering and electronics) and power engineering, this gives them in-depth knowledge of fundamental components present in power automated systems. As an electrical engineer you would spend your working hours designing and supervising the construction of systems and equipment that produce, distribute or use electricity. You would also be involved in calculating costs, bidding for contracts, overseeing electricity system tests and writing reports or instruction manuals.
